Reading Update

This week our story is "Goin' Someplace Special" (Unit 4 Week 1) The Selection test will be given on Friday along with the Spelling/vocabulary test. Vocab. books and spellingcity are due Friday, too. We are squeezing quite a bit into a short week.

The monthly reading goal for January is 1 Science non-fiction book and 1 chapter book.

Also, this week marks the beginning of the Reading Rocks competition. Each month we will tally up the number of words read by students and the class in each grade level with the highest amount will be awarded a blue ribbon to display for the month. The number of words is calculated through the reading counts program, so the students much take the online quiz in order for the book to be included. Once they have met their monthly goal, they are encouraged to read any book of their choice in any Lexile range and test on it. Their total number of words read will be added up through Reading Counts. Last year, the students got really excited and competitive with this. It was a great motivatorJ

**January 24th is conference night. Please contact me asap if you would like to meet. This would be a great time to discuss any questions you have about grades, homework or Camp LaNoChe. I will be scheduling in 20 minute blocks.

Manatee's "ALL-STAR" Walk-A-Thon will be held on Friday, January 18th (rain day will be on Jan. 25th). All students will be participating during their activity time. Students are encouraged to ask family and friends to support them with pledges. All funds collected will be used to purchase materials and equipment needed to enhance our activity programs at Manatee.

This year, we are adding some new energy to make this healthy event fun and exciting. Children are encouraged to wear "ALL-STAR" attire, this can be anything athletic, sport, or fitness related with appropriate sneakers (no cleats). Pledge envelopes will be sent home on the week of January 8-11th. All collected pledges are due back by Friday, January 25th.

Are you an "ALL-STAR" Parent? Come join us and volunteer! If you are interested, please contact Nicki Hensley @ There will also be a volunteer sign up sheet in the front office. Thank you for supporting this healthy fundraiser.

I hope you all had a relaxing, fun holiday break. We are looking forward to lots of fun and learning in 2013.
