End of April – May 2014

Awards Ceremony

The last Awards Ceremony will be Tuesday, May 27 at 9:15 am in the Cafeteria. Check your child's silver folder daily for an invitation. The Character Traits showcased are Perseverance and Citizenship.

Field Day – Date Change!

Originally scheduled for Thursday of this week – it has been changed to Friday, May 9 – 9:40 – 11:00. Wear the purple Sensation Second Grade T-Shirt and tennis shoes for the day. Water bottles will be provided for all students. Are you available to help out? Let Ms. Best know!

Math ….

District Assessment will be on May 15 and 16. Every day is still very full with teaching; please encourage your child to stay focused even though the time is winding down….Be sure your child knows his/her Math Facts to 20 – addition and subtraction. 90% accuracy is the goal. The xtramath.org website that students have been working with in class for months is a great tool to help with knowing those facts.

Quality Work….

Continue to check your child's work that comes home from school and homework. There is a pattern of laziness that is starting – the building of a strong work ethic starts now. Be the parent that builds with your child and me….it really does pay off!

Last Days of School

May 27, 28, 29 – Early Dismissal Days – 1:20 pm (Bus riders are dismissed at 1:15).

Interims were issued 4/30 – please sign and return if you have not already done so. This will be the last Interim Report for the school year.

Final Report Cards/Progress Reports come home on the last day of school, Thursday, May 29. Inside the envelope (gold) will be a Supply List for Third Grade!

ALL LIBRARY BOOKS DUE BACK TO MANATEE ON FRIDAY, MAY 9!!

We still have room for 2 more chaperones, so email me or send a note in your child's folder indicating you are available that day – Wednesday, May 30 – 9:30 – 1:00. Parents need to drive and meet us there.

End of Year Celebration

If you could send those in by Wed., April 9, it would greatly help the planning/preparation process. If you have not sent in the pink sheet yet, there is still time! Just have your child hand it to me. Looking forward to 10 stations of fun and celebration of the Season of Spring!

  • Looking into future, for planning purposes, Friday, April 18 – No School/Student ~ Teacher Holiday

We could use some more Post Its/Sticky notes! We use them all the time for the lessons being taught – making charts, graphing, indicating what we know, what we wonder about…. Thank you ahead of time!

FYI ---- FCAT Proctoring in Third Grade – I will doing this on the mornings of April 16 and 17. My students will follow their normal morning classroom procedures.

Homework passes: students may receive a pass to skip homework for one night using their homework pass. The student is to write their name and date they want to skip homework and attach to the homework sheet the week they are using it. Parents please sign the back of the pass, so I know saw what piece of homework is being skipped for the night. Passes are given out for clean desks or cubbies, quality work, great choices/behavior inside and outside the classroom, and personal best work. Passes can only be used once. This is a great motivator in the classroom to earn more!

Reading Nightly – I know how busy life can become! Truly the rewards of making sure your child reads at least 20 minutes per night will exponentially increase as the school years fly by! I speak from experience with my own children. Please mark the effort in your child's planner or have your child write it. Your attention to the importance of this will showcase the priority you put on daily reading. Certainly include our story of the week as one of those nights. We are in review mode right now for the District Tests in March. You will not regret the time spent – guaranteed!

A note from Mrs. Kuhlblank, our Magnificent Media Specialist:

Next week we have some exciting events going on and I wanted to share them with you on how Manatee Elementary will Celebrate Literacy Week!!

Each morning on the Manny TV News, we will be sharing reading facts and statistics from our Reading Rocks program and SRI statistics of student improvement.  Special guests will also share their favorite books and help to get our Manatee students excited about reading.

As you enter school on Monday, we will have a "Word Walk" experience on display throughout the building.  Word Wall words will appear for each grade level which students and teachers may read as they move about the hallways all week long. Enjoy strolling down the hallways reading words and discussing their meaning.

On Wednesday, since it is a shortened school day, our wonderful Activity Teachers are going to host the Million Minute Marathon with their classes on this day.  A cart full of books will be waiting as classes visit their assigned Activity and will read for the 30 minutes instead of the regularly scheduled lesson. (If your students have a particular book that they'd rather read, please encourage them to bring it to activity on this day!!!) We will submit these minutes to represent our school participation to the state of Florida!! Go Manatee!!

Thanks for your help in making this a special week full of awareness to the importance of reading and how it can help shape our young lives!!

Reading Accelerates Success!!!

Friday, 1/17/14: Walkathon Event – make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and in comfortable clothing/shoes. Water bottles are being provided so no need to send in.

***Reading R.O.C.K.S. competition details:

Be creative and let your child do the work, including the research while you oversee the overall project. This will be due on or before November 26.

Pop Top Collection Continues as an 11 year tradition at Manatee……

Manatee families! We are once again collecting Pop Tops for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. This is our eleventh year supporting the local program that offers discounted stays in the RMH in Orlando. Throughout the past 10 years we have collected over 4000 lbs. of pop tops which has enabled us to donate close to $2000 to the charity. Please send in your pop tops at any point throughout the year. Homeroom teachers will collect the tops for classroom prizes awarded in May. Tops will be taken to the recycling center in April for the final donation. Don't forget to ask your families from out of town if they can collect for you as well. Put out collection containers at work, extracurricular activities, and any place you can think of. Thank you for helping us support this worthwhile cause all of these years!

Book It! Calendar for November is due on December 2nd – Students are really reading up a storm and turning in calendars! Harvest Party – October 31st …..

Thank you to the parents who have already responded to the note that came home in your child's folder yesterday!

Your support is so appreciated. I have talked with our class regarding behavior. Between now and the day of the party, if any child moves his/her card to yellow or red the possibility is high that he/she will not be attending the party. I will find an alternative location such as the library or another teacher's classroom for that student to do work in while our party is going on. I appreciate your support in this important matter as proven good behavior will assure all students in Mrs. Forester's and Mrs. Gravina's class will have a great time at the party! (Note: no costumes, face art, etc. please).

Parent Conference Night

Tuesday, October 29th – 5 – 7 pm. I have met with so many of you already I am pleased to say. If you have not had a chance to schedule a conference yet, please send me an email or note in your child's green folder – the conferences are in 15 minute increments.
