Manatee Elementary School
Mrs. Gravina's Second Grade Class
Welcome to a new school year!
I am very excited about the opportunity to work with you and your child this school year. I look forward to teaching your child using the Scott Foresman Envision program for Math, the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill program for Social Studies and the National Geographic program for Science. We are also launching the NEW Florida Journeys Common Core program by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for Reading and Language Arts!!!!
The ability to read is essential to our lives and should be learned just like walking and talking. This process should be fun! The best way for your child to learn to love reading is to read on a regular basis with someone he or she loves. Not only does your child need to experience good literature, he or she needs to discuss and write about what they have read.
Homework will start soon!! Stay tuned for the exact date. Each student will be assigned a yellow homework folder. Homework will consist of studying spelling words for a spelling test that will be given each Friday, and reading the weekly story on Wednesdays. This will be from the second grade basal reading book that each student will be assigned. Homework may also include math and spelling pages and occasionally may include: grammar, vocabulary, or a story comprehension page. Spellingcity.com will also become part of homework at some point!
Take Home Folder
Each student will be taking home a gray folder on the first day of school. This will be the designated TAKE HOME Folder. I will be sending papers home daily in this folder. It will have papers that have been graded and some that have been completed in class. Most math papers from the student workbook will be completed together and checked together in class and will not have a grade on them. Please look over your child's papers as they come home.
These are our classroom rules. My full discipline plan will be going home for you to review with your child. The discipline plan is also attached in the document section of my web page for reference. We will have a color clip system set up to remind students to make good choices. Please also refer to the Manatee Student Handbook and Calendar for 2013-2014 school year to answer more specific questions, it includes details on Manatee's dress code and other important polices.

Please try to speak to me directly if there is a change in dismissal during the school day. Please do not leave a phone message. I may not get to my phone messages in time. You can also write a note and have your child hand it to me in the morning. If your child is a walker or bike rider please make sure I am aware of your specific rainy day procedures. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. I just like to make sure everyone goes home safely!
If your child should miss a day of school for any reason, please send a written note explaining why your child was out. If a written excuse is not received your child will be marked with an unexcused absence.
The school nurse will dispense all medications to students. Teachers cannot keep or administer any medication, including cough drops. Please refer to the office or school nurse for the school medication policy.
All school newsletters and my class newsletter will be sent by e-mail. Please look for updates and information about our classroom on my class website http://manatee.sp.brevardschools.org/Gravina//
A final note:
I strongly discourage students from bringing personal items to school such as toys, radios, special pens, make-up, etc. Any item that causes a disruption will be held until a parent can come by the school and pick it up.
I look forward to a fantastic year! Thank you so much for your help. Please give me a call with any questions or concerns. (433-0050 ext. 5608). You can also e-mail me at Gravina.Laura@brevardschools.org
