May 1st – Chick-Fil-A Night Sponsored by 2nd grade!

May 9th– Field Day (Our time to go is 9:40-11:00) *Great time to volunteer*

May 9th – Spirit Night at Fun Town

May 14th – PTO Meeting 2:40 p.m. and SAC Meeting at 4:00 p.m.

 

Shelby and Bryce will be attending our own Manatee writing celebration. Their books were chosen to represent our class at the Oscars. Congratulations! The Oscars will be on Tuesday, May 20th.

Interims go home this week. Anyone who has questions regarding Interims can contact me at anytime!

 

On May 15th we will have our annual talent show. Tickets will go on sale soon!

In Reading we are working on long I (y/ie/igh) along with adjectives. We will also continue to work with comparing and contrasting stories.


In Math last week we worked using money; dimes, nickels, and pennies. This week and next week we are working on reviewing strategies along with rotating math centers that support our review for the end of the year assessment.

In Social Studies we are finishing up our economics unit. We will be taking about how we use and save money along with reviewing for our last Social Studies district test this year!

In Science we are working in groups and will be researchng various animals and presenting poster reports! We will also be reviewing for our last district Science test this year.

 

We are recycling all magazines, newspapers, Capri suns, ink cartridges, and cell phones at this time. Please bring in any of these items and we will recycle them for you!

 

 

Our spring centers will be on Friday. Thank you goes out to all my parents for donating items and their time to make this a great success!

Friday, April 18th is a Student/Teacher holiday!

We are currently working on the ow, and the ou sound as in "cow" and "ouch' in reading. Also we are reviewing contrations. We are continuing to work on charcter and setting. Next week we will be working on base words with the "ing" and "ed" ending. In our next weeks story we will be working on comparing and contrasting.

In Math, we are working on "simple" double digit addition along with regrouping. Next week we will be moving into double sigit subtraction. We have been doing a bunch of math fact sheets in hopes that th kids will really brush up on thei facts!!!

In Social Studies we have been working on goods and services along with understanding what is scarcity?

Our third through sixth grade students have been working hard all year long and they will get the opportunity to show what they know on the 2014 FCAT test taking place April 14th- 17th

        In order to provide a quiet testing environment we are asking to have no classroom volunteers (K-6th grade) during this time.

Carnival night is coming! Thursday March 20th at 5:00p.m. get your hot dog tickets now! We will only sell them up until the 14th of March. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PURCHASE THOSE TICKETS FOR HOT DOGS ON THE NIGHT OF THE CARNIVAL!!

In Reading we are reviewing this week for the district required reading assessment that we will be taking later this week. Next week we are working on conclusions along with visualizing. We will continue to work on the controlled r vowel sound.

In math we spent some time revisiting strategies so we could prepare for our district assessment. We will continue to work on shapes and move into adding and subtracting double digit numbers! PLEASE PRACTICE MATH FACTS AT HOME. I went over them again this week and they struggled with them!

 

In Social Studies we will be learning about goods and services.

We will be taking our District Required Science Assessment this week. The following week we will be exploring Physical Science. (Pushes and Pulls)

Our field trip will be on March 20th to the Planetarium. Please continue to turn in your field trip forms by this Tuesday 18th!

 

Dr. Seuss day is approaching on March 3rd. Students are encouraged to bring in a Dr. Seuss book that day and dress like their favorite character if they choose too.

 

We had our Valentine Sundae Party and it was a great success. Thanks to all of my parents for their wonderful support.

Our play is March 6th. The kids are in the process of learning their songs. I will email you once they lyrics are available on the "Mantaee Music" website. Ms. Orth will be sending a letter home soon about our play.

 

We are working on compound words, prepositions, prepositional phrases and cause and effect. The following week we will be working on words with the controlled "r" along with pronouns and analyzing the text.

In Math, although we work on time daily at calendar we will be targeting O'Clocks and Half Hours. The following week we will be learning about fractions and reviewing shapes. This should be fun for the kids!

 

In Social Studies we are continuing to work on our biography books about important people of our past and we researched past presidents, inventors, and astronauts.

In Science we are learning about planets, transportation and a review on weather.

EARLY RELEASE DAY WILL BE February 26th at 1:15.

Look out this TUESDAY for a project coming home. Every year Manatee Elementary participates in a quality literature day and 2 children from each classroom participate in a celebration for young authors. Each student will be writing a book at home. The guidelines will be stated on the paper going home tomorrow. All students will have PLENTY of time to complete the book and I will even be assigning it as homework one week in March! Look for the letter and as always you can email any questions you have regarding the book!

We will be having a sundae "friendship" party on Valentine's Day. I am sending home a note asking for parent donations so the kids can make their own sudaes! I am also sending home a list so the kids can make valentines for the class!

Early Release Day is February 12th at 1:15p.m.

There is a student holiday on Monday, February 17th for students. All teachers will have a professional development day!

 

The kids have started to learn their songs for our performance in March. Mark your calendars: March 6th at 6:00p.m.

Field Trip forms went home a while ago. We are going to the Planetarium in March. Please get those forms in by February 14th.

 

All students received their Unit 4 books. We worked on long e and we will be working on long ai ay this week. We will also be continuing to work on inflectional endings.

In Math, we finished up working on greater than, less than, and are now working on mental math of plus 10, subtract 10. We are working hard on NOT using the 100's chart but create mental pictures in our head to problem solve. I have noticed that some students need PRACTICE on their strategies. I reviewed them this past week and it seems that we need to revisit some of these strategies.

In Science we are studying the sun and stars. This week we made a model of the sun and will be learning about shadows this coming week and clouds. The following week we will take a look at the planets!

In Social Studies we are learning all about Florida. We will continue to learn all about the state we live in this week!

A big thank you goes out to Mr. Manarik for donating water bottles to all students for our walk-a-thon. We really appreciated it! Also, please make sure if you are pledging to return your envelopes this week.

Thank you to all my parents for always donating items when needed for our classroom activities. We will celebrate the 100th day this Friday.

IT IS TIME FOR OUR SPRING WRITING PROJECT. Look for a letter to go home this week!

First grade will be participating in a play. Our date is March 6th . Look for more information to go home soon regarding this fun event!

 

We just finished our last week in Unit 3. All students turned in their Unit 3 books and will be assigned Unit 4 books this week.

In Math, we continue to work with 10's and 1's along with using the number line and numbers up to 120. Some students are struggling with this concept. This skill is something we go over DAILY during calendar. We will also continue with using symbols for greater than and less than this coming week.

We are continuing to work and learn study the sun and stars. We learned about constellations and the kids made their own and named them! They are hanging up in the classroom. This week w will be working with a telesope and exploring the stars in the sky!

In social studies we are learning about the compass rose, political and physical maps. We will also be learning about the continents and the globe.

I hope everyone had a restful winter break. I hope you all enjoyed spending time with your family and friends during the holiday season. I can't believe it is already January!

Our 1st grade play will be coming up in February. Look for more information to go home soon regarding this play and volunteers needed for this exciting event.

 

Awards are going home in some report cards this week. Each nine weeks students are chosen to receive an award; principal, scholastic, and character awards. ALL STUDENTS will receive some kind of award this year! If your child did not receive an award last nine weeks or this nine weeks please remember we have 2 more nine weeks ahead of us and be assured he/she will receive an award. J

 

Ou annual walk-a-thon will be on Friday, January 18th during our scheduled activity time.

 

Report cards will be going home on January 9th. If I have NOT met with you this year conference night is coming again on January 16th at 5:00 p.m. I encourage you to schedule a conference. I am also available in the morning at 7:30, or 9:15 on Mondays, or Wednesdays, or at the end of the day at 2:50. Please let me know if you would like to meet.. Please schedule early for the evening of January 16th. These conferences will begin promptly at 5:00 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m.

 

Pearson Success is a wonderful math program that helps all students practice math skills that we have learned in class. It is a great way for your child to work from home on the computer for extra practice. Passwords were sent home a while ago. If you have misplaced your password please feel free to shoot me an email and I will provide you with a new one.

We are working on an author study this week by Jan Brett. We will be comparing and contrasting her stories and working on main idea and details. Next week we will be studying long I, and suffixes -er -est, along with informative writing using a variety of different word choices. Please know that all students may take their reading books home each night if they would like to re-read any old stories or read the variety of stories that are in our book that we cover weekly. Please remember if you do so the books MUST come back the next day.

In Math, we are working in cooperative centers this week. Next week we will continue with place value as wee dig deeper with greater than and less than and using those symbols in math. We will continue review numbers 11 to 20. We will practice skip counting along with strategy based addition and subtraction. We will also be working with estimating, tens and ones, along with numbers up to 120.

 

In Science we finished up our unit on land and water unit and are moving to sun and stars this nine weeks. These 2 units of study are combined into 18 weeks and all students will test on these 2 units at the end of this nine weeks.

We completed our Social Studies district required semester assessment before the holidays. This test was based on units of study that were taught since the 2nd nine weeks. All students did well on this test. Soon we will be learning about the compass rose, map keys, and learning about Florida.

HOMEWORK WILL NOT RESUME UNTIL THE WEEK OF January 14th. I will NOT be continuing with calendars unless you personally email me and tell me you would like a calendar daily. The kids have been doing great and work well when redirected. I also will be changing their reading groups in January. I went ahead and changed their Raz-Kids levels. Expectations will change as I will expect more from them as we move into 2014. More information will be conveyed as we move into the New Year.

  • CONFERENCE NIGHT IS JANUARY 16TH! IF WE HAVE NOT HAD A CONFERENCE THIS YEAR IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE SIT DOWN AT THAT TIME AND TOUCH BASE ABOUT YOUR CHILD'S PROGRESS IN FIRST GRADE.

 

I want to say good bye to a very sweet college student Miranda Foster who has been coming in and helping our class every week. She is headed off to college and the kids are just going to miss her dearly!

Next week we will be researching holidays and exploring history, traditions, and food from around the world. I want to thank all my parents who were so generous to say yes to donate an item for this week long event!

 

Our Book Exchange is Tuesday the 18th. We have been putting books under our tree all week long. This is always a fun event for the kids!

In Math, we just finished a week of review and math centers. The kids took a district required math test and did great! They still could use help with VERBALIZING STRATEGIES! We will be working on place value < > = when we come back from break. I can't tell you enough how important it is that they are able to use these strategies when figuring out their math problems. We review these strategies daily but I think it would be helpful for you to work with your child at home too.

In Social Studies students we researched famous people and they presented as a group to the class this week. We also took the district required exam and the kids did great! Next week we will learning about different countries and how they celebrate the holidays.

EARLY DISMISSAL NEXT WEEK ON WEDNESDAY THURSDAY AND FRIDAY! Dismissal is at 1:15!

We came in 3rd place in 1st grade for November/December Reading Rocks program. We now have a "guitar" hanging from our bulletin board for the month of January!

PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD BRING IN A NEW SET OF CRAYONS AFTER WINTER BREAK SO THEY CAN FRESHEN UP THEIR BAGGIES. They have used them up and some are broken and in small pieces. It will be nice for them to come back and have fresh crayons.

I hope everyone has a great winter break and enjoys spending time with family and friends! Have a great holiday and a happy and healthy new year!

Holiday time is a great time for children to show off their reading skills to family and friends. Have your child read their favorite book to family and friends. I think everyone will enjoy a good book being read to them by an awesome first grader!

 

 

Our Thanksgiving activities were a great success. I want to thank all my parents who donated items to make it so successful. It was great to see the students try all the different pies and some even have new favorites. Thanks again for making that such a fun activity for the kids! They really enjoyed learning, eating and writing about pies!

That's right….more holidays to come into our classroom soon. We will be celebrating the history of Mexico, Israel, Italy, and the United States. I will be sending home a letter soon regarding these activities. Please sign it and return it as soon as possible if you are able to donate an item or want to share your traditions.

 

 

In reading we are working on long a, verbs, reviewing nouns, along digraphs. Please work on these concepts with your child nightly. WE WILL ONLY HAVE 6 SPELLING WORDS AFTER THANKSGIVING. WE ARE WRAPPING UP AND PREPARING FOR OUR DISTRICT REQUIRED ASSESSMENT. Please go over all 100 FRY words which you can find on my website under documents as a review.

In Math we are continuing to work on place value and will be working on reviewing graphing, time, and shapes as well as math strategies. Please continue to practice math strategies and math facts with your child.

In Social Studies we are learning about past, present, future, and have fun activities to go along with these concepts. We will also be reviewing and testing for social studies in the next week or so!

In Science we finished our science fair project and will display it in the library. The kids had a great time bouncing the ball and measuring if the "surface affects how high a ball bounces" and they had fun recording their results. We will continue learning about land and water and finish after our winter break.
