HEAD LICE

It's that time of year when Head Lice starts spreading! Head Lice are insects that live on the hairs of the head especially behind the ears and back of the head. Lice eggs attach to the hair strand. They are not a health hazard and do not spread diseases; they cannot fly or jump, they only crawl. Head Lice are treatable with various over-the-counter shampoos (pediculicides). It is very important to wash all bedding and clothing in hot water, and soak hairbrushes and combs in hot water (or just replace them). Also, vacuum everything, including your car.

NEW KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

Kindergarten Orientation for new kindergarteners for next year will be held on Tuesday, April 20th at 6:00 p.m. If you have a child who will be starting Kindergarten in August, please call the school office at 433-0050, to confirm that you are coming to the meeting. You can also call the office if you are not sure of what school your child will attend due to redistricting.

BOXTOPS

Boxtops are in and counted for this deposit; we collected $1258.20 over the past four months! That is incredible! So far the classes with the highest amount of boxtops turned in are Mrs. Stohr in 1st place, Miss Marzig in 2nd place, and Ms. Melby in 3rd place. With all that money we can purchase some much needed equipment and supplies for our school. Remember that we collect boxtops and Campbell's soup UPC's 12 months out of the year. Just put them in a bag with your teacher's name on it and drop them in the giant soup can in the lobby. Together we can all make a difference, one dime at a time!

Odyssey of the Mind Update

We had a number of students sign up to participate in Odyssey of the Mind.  Unfortunately we do not have enough parent coaches to place all students on teams.  At this time we have two active teams.  If your student has not yet been contacted by a coach regarding practices, we were unable to place him or her this year.  If any slots open up on a team in the coming weeks, your child may be contacted.  Again, we are sorry we cannot place every student at this time.  Thank you for your interest in the program.

VISION AND HEARING SCREENING

It is time once again for our annual Vision and Hearing Screening.  The Brevard Public Schools provides this free service for students. This assists in the identification of students who may require further evaluation. The screenings are conducted by the Speech Language Pathologists, and a certified Hearing Specialist. The vision screenings are supervised by a professional Vision Specialist. The dates for the vision and hearing screenings are December 1st, 2nd and 3rd.  All students  in grades K, 1st, 3rd and 6th are required to participate in this screening process.  ALL exceptional education students are required to participate as well.  In addition, students in 2nd, 4th and 5th  who are listed on the county rescreen roster must participate. Students who wear glasses must be in possession of their glasses during the vision screening.

If you do not want your child to participate in these screenings and have not sent in a form stating this, please contact the school nurse as soon as possible to complete the "Opt Out" form.

There is a great need for volunteers to assist in this very crucial event. If you are interested, please contact the Manatee volunteer coordinator for the speech/hearing screenings, Sally Kornick, at 752-7545. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kelly, Manatee Speech Therapist, at 433-0050, ext. 5600.
